Here's my quick non-spoilery breakdown on overall quality. Rocky is a classic and a great film. Rocky II is a bit of a rehash but good nonetheless. Rocky III has probably the best villain. Rocky IV is pure 80s Cold War cheese but a lot of fun. Rocky V is the weakest of the series, but easy enough to get through.
I see whenever the subject is brought up, people rank Rocky 2 quite consistently as the second best in the series, sometimes even higher than 1. I don't get it. It's a vastly inferior rehash of the first movie and misses the whole point.
Rocky 2 in my opinion is a better movie than the original. I know that's a hot take but I think it's true. The story is much clearer and more well established throughout. The characters also all have more development and personality and are more relatable in this one.

The absolute best film in my opinion is Rocky II. The main reason is the hero prevails at the end and overcomes the odds. In the first bout against Apollo, Rocky goes the distance. In part II, he finishes the story. I also love the training montage in part II, it might be my favorite in the series. It’s a toss up between II and IV.
