The BFG (short for The Big Friendly Giant) is a 1982 children's novel by British author Roald Dahl. It is an expansion of a short story from Dahl's 1975 novel Danny, the Champion of the World. The book is dedicated to Dahl's oldest daughter, Olivia, who had died of measles encephalitis at the age of seven in 1962.

- “The BFG” was first optioned for the screen in 1993. “It’s been a long journey,” said Spielberg’s producer Frank Marshall who worked on the film with Kathleen Kennedy.
- Spielberg expanded Dahl’s story with the blessing of his estate. The beloved author passed away in 1990—hating every Hollywood adaptation ever made from one of his books, including “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
