Such was the case for The Waltons, which filmed mountains and buildings using studio set-pieces and Hollywood hills, but actually took some very real inspiration from real life. In particular, it derived inspiration from the book and film Spencer’s Mountain.
In addition to the Walton characters, other roles, such as the “recipe-making” Baldwin sisters and General Store owner, Ike Godsey were also inspired by real people. The Baldwin sisters were loosely based on a mother-daughter duo that was well-known in Hamner’s family because “they had a love of alcohol.”
As a novelist, he is best known for Spencer's Mountain, which was inspired by his own childhood and formed the basis for both the film of the same name and the television series The Waltons, for which he provided voice-over narration.

It isn't accurate to say that "The Waltons" is based on this book; rather, there are echoes of "Spencer's Mountain" in "The Waltons." The book tells a simple story, that's true. But it is this very simplicity that allows it to work so well.
