Es la ciudad cabecera del departamento homónimo, y se encuentra situada en el oeste de la Pampa Húmeda, en una penillanura al este de la Sierra de Comechingones, a orillas del río del cual tomó el nombre, río Cuarto, conocido también como Chocancharava.

It lies along the Cuarto River between the western reaches of the Pampas and the foothills of the Cóndores Mountains. The city was inaugurated in 1794 under the sponsorship of Governor Rafael de Sobremonte, the Spanish intendant.
