     • Unique - Guarantees unique values for the column(or set of columns) included in the index
     • Covering - Includes all of the columns that are used in a particular query (or set of queries), allowing the database to use only the index and not actually have to look at the table data to retrieve the results
     • Clustered - This is way in which the actual data is ordered on the disk, which means if a query uses the clustered index for looking up the values, it does not have to take the additional step of looking up the actual table row for any data not included in the index.

     OdeToCode has a good article covering the basic differences

     As it says in the article:

     Proper indexes are crucial for good performance in large databases. Sometimes you can make up for a poorly written query with a good index, but it can be hard to make up for poor indexing with even the best queries.

     Quite true, too... If you're just starting out with it, I'd focus on clustered and composite indexes, since they'll probably be what you use the most.

     I'll add a couple of index types

     BITMAP - when you have very low number of different possible values, very fast and doesn't take up much space

     PARTITIONED - allows the index to be partitioned based on some property usually advantageous on very large database objects for storage or performance reasons.

     FUNCTION/EXPRESSION indexes - used to pre-calculate some value based on the table and store it in the index, a very simple example might be an index based on lower() or a substring function.

     The benefit of little endianness is that a variable can be read as any length using the same address.

     For example a 32 bit variable can be read as an 8 bit or 16 bit variable without changing the address. This may have limited benefit these days, but in the days of assembler and limited memory it could be a significant advantage

     Why is this interface used?

     Because it supports the basic operations that would allow a client programmer to iterate over any kind of collection (note: not necessarily a Collection in the Object sense).

     Why are the methods... not directly coded to the data structure implementation itself?

     They are, they're just marked Private so you can't reach into them and muck with them. More specifically:

     • You can implement or subclass an Iterator such that it does something the standard ones don't do, without having to alter the actual object it iterates over.
     • Objects that can be traversed over don't need to have their interfaces cluttered up with traversal methods, in particular any highly specialized methods.
     • You can hand out Iterators to however many clients you wish, and each client may traverse in their own time, at their own speed.
     • Java Iterators from the java.util package in particular will throw an exception if the storage that backs them is modified while you still have an Iterator out. This exception lets you know that the Iterator may now be returning invalid objects.

     For simple programs, none of this probably seems worthwhile. The kind of complexity that makes them useful will come up on you quickly, though.

     The main reason why I use such method is because they are effectively named constructors. For example for Color the order in which the components get specified isn't obvious without a name. Usually ARGB is used, but sometimes you also see BGRA or even an entirely different color space like HSV. Putting the used color order into the method name, makes the code more self documenting.

     Another advantage is that static methods support type inference. For example with Tuple<...>, you can simply use Tuple.Create(1,5) instead of the more verbose new Tuple<int,int>(1,5).

     Personally I myself prefer jsp/servlet but theoretically Struts has some advantages. Here are some of the advantages i know of, you might have mentioned them already, but i thought it would be better if i list all of them here.

     • Centralized File-Based Configuration.Struts values/mapping are represented in XML or property files. This loose coupling means that many changes can be made without modifying or recompiling Java code, and that wholesale changes can be made by editing a single file. This approach also lets Java and Web developers focus on their specific tasks (implementing business logic, presenting certain values to clients, etc.) without needing to know about the overall system layout.
     • Form Beans.
     • Bean Tags.Struts provides a set of custom JSP tags that let you easily output the properties of JavaBeans components.

     Form Field Validation. Struts has a robust, extensible validator that can be used to uniformly validate your form fields. This validation can be performed on the server (in Java), or both on the server and on the client (in JavaScript).

     "Plumbing code" contained within the Struts framework. Mapping HTTP request parameters to Java objects is handled by Struts, for example. You don't have to do it. This allows you to focus more on the domain problem instead of building infrastructure.

     Good documentation & plenty of books. If you have to leave the project and/or someone else has to maintain it then using a well known and well documented framework will make that job much easier. A homebrewed framework just can't match that.

     Broad user testing. Since Struts is used in plenty web-apps the framework will get looked at by many more eyes than anything you could write alone. Usually, but not always, that means any problems you have will have been seen by someone else (and hopefully resolved) first.

     • HTML Tags.Struts provides a set of custom JSP tags to create HTML forms that are associated with JavaBeans components. This bean/form association serves two useful purposes: It lets you get initial form-field values from Java objects.It lets you redisplay forms with some or all previously entered values intact.
