- The Thing. Whenever somebody tells you that remakes are inherently worse than the original, point them to this claustrophobic masterpiece. You can tell that John Carpenter grew up watching and thinking about classic sci-fi films: He's taken a fairly standard premise and injected it with fresh, wild ideas.
