How to Pray the Rosary Beginner’s Guide. The rosary is divided into five groups of ten beads called decades. As we pray the rosary we meditate on the events of Our Lord’s life and Passion, which are called Mysteries. The repetition of the prayers assists in this prayerful meditation.
- Start with making the Sign of the Cross. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
- While holding the cross on your rosary, begin the Apostles’ Creed. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
- Move to the first bead and pray the Our Father. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
- Now, pray a Hail Mary for the next three beads, asking for more faith, hope, and love, which are important theological virtues. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
- Make the sign of the cross while holding the crucifix located at the bottom of the rosary. The prayer that generally accompanies this is “In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
- Recite the Apostles Creed, as follows: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
- Take the first large bead between your fingers and recite the Our Father prayer, as follows: Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
- Next, on each of the three small beads, you will recite a Hail Mary, as follows: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
