  1. The meaning of AM and PM is the simple abbreviation of Latin phrases. In particular, AM stands for ante meridiem, which translates into English as ‘before midday’. Meanwhile, PM is post meridiem and means in English ‘after midday’. These abbreviations are used to identify the time in the 12-hour clock format instead of using 24 hours.

  2. Dec 9, 2010 · The PM part means "post meridian" which 12:00:00 is not. It is merely convention that 12:00:00 (which follows 11:59:59am and is followed by 12:00:01pm) is labelled 12:00:00pm. The point remains that midnight touches two dates and is technically part of the start of the day not the end.

  3. PM = Post meridiem: After noon. Using numbers from 1 to 12, followed by am or pm, the 12-hour clock system identifies all 24 hours of the day. For example, 5 am is early in the morning, and 5 pm is late in the afternoon; 1 am is one hour after midnight, while 11 pm is one hour before midnight.

  4. The 24-hour clock is a way of telling the time in which the day runs from midnight to midnight and is divided into 24 hours, numbered from 0 to 23. It does not use a.m. or p.m.

  6. Dec 16, 2022 · Just before 12:00 noon is AM and just after is PM, so lets take a look at both cases – how it works if 12:00 noon is AM and if it is PM. Let’s try both and see which makes most sense: If 12:00 noon is 12:00AM Time would progress as: 11:59AM, 12:00AM, 12:01PM. This does not look right as 12 o’clock starts as AM then goes to PM.

Feb 4, 2010 · Since noon is neither before noon nor after noon, a designation of either a.m. or p.m. is incorrect. Also, midnight is both twelve hours before noon and twelve hours after noon. It is fair to say, however, that the shortest measurable duration after noon should be designated as p.m.
