    • Honorable Mention: Pole Position. For many, this was the racing video game that started it all. Whether you found it in an arcade, or snapped the cartridge into your Atari at home, the simplicity of Pole Position was simultaneously a big part of its charm.
    • Honorable Mention: Chase HQ. Taito's Chase HQ was basically Pole Position with much better graphics and the concept of law and order through in to boot.
    • Honorable Mention: Outrun. Outrun was the ultimate evolution of the Pole Position concept, only this time you were driving an awesome Ferrari down palm-lined boulevards at speeds that would have given Atari developers an aneurysm.
    • 10. Top Gear / Top Gear 2. The Top Gear series of games combined a number of key concepts that had been explored by other Super Nintendo racing games, but never together in the same package.
    • Forza Motorsport 4 - Xbox 360. It's entirely possible that the upcoming Forza 7 will take its place as the best car racing game ever made, but until then, it's safe to say that Forza Motorsport 4 reigns supreme.
    • Project Cars - PC/Xbox One/PS4. Even though Forza and Gran Turismo steal the simulation spotlight on the regular, we're now living in something of a golden age of super-realistic car games.
    • Dirt Rally - PC/Xbox One/PS4. Purists may argue that 2004's Richard Burns Rally and its hyper-realistic approach to rally racing set a new benchmark in video games, and there's no denying the game's influence or how well it plays (graphics are another story) even thirteen years later.
    • Forza Horizon 3 - PC/Xbox One. The Forza Horizon series is like a music festival for cars: you're never going to see an automotive lineup this diverse in a world so richly rendered anywhere else, even if the performances aren't the greatest.

    • Sega Rally Championship. Debuting in 1994, the arcade game was considered to be one of the milestones in the evolution of the racing game genre. It was later made available for Sega Saturn and PC.
    • Gran Turismo. Following extensive development, Gran Turismo hit the shelves in 1997 and 1998 for PlayStation. It featured 140 cars and 11 race tracks (which was a lot at the time), was one of the first to introduce gamers to simulation racing and kicked off one of the biggest game franchises in the world.
    • Super Mario Kart. This is one of the best and most well-loved game series of all time, let alone in the racing sector. The original title was introduced in 1992 for SNES and Virtual Console.
  3. Rock n' Roll Racing. Featuring more ROCK per pixel than any other racing game, this married Megadriverized electro versions of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Steppenwolf to blow-'em'up 4x4 racing...
