   • Adopted in 1907, the Mk III variant of the Short Magazine Rifle saw service through both world wars and the Korean War. The rifle’s official designation was changed in 1926 to “Rifle, No. 1 Mk III” and then again in 1944 to “Rifle, No. 1 Mk 3”, but it was more popularly known as the “smelly” or “smiley” based on the SMLE initials.

   • SMLE Mk III rifles such as the example at left, which was made by the Birmingham Small Arms Co. in 1913, served the British “Tommy” well in the harsh conditions of World War I.
