  2. The End of the Tour taking place over more days and covering more situations allows you to see that relationship grow and change which I think gives the conversations more personal impact beyond just the ideas they bring up. I really thought this was a much more emotionally moving film.

Directed by James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now), The End of the Tour tells the true story of the five-day interview between Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky and acclaimed novelist David Foster Wallace, which took place soon after the 1996 publication of Wallace's groundbreaking novel Infinite Jest. Jesse Eisenberg plays Lipsky, who is an aspiring novelist himself (though nowhere near on the same level as his celebrated subject), while Segel assumes the challenging role of Wallace, a literary genius who seems happier living his life in solitude than basking in his recent success.

What makes The End of the Tour unique as a biopic (if you can even call it that) is its slice-of-life approach. Instead of going through Wallace's whole life from start to finish, the film focuses squarely on the interview, which takes place during the tail-end of Wallace's book tour (hence the film's title). As such, screenwriter Donald Margulies's script is structured kind of like a road movie, but that's merely the backdrop for what is essentially a feature-length conversation.

Fortunately, the dialogue is enthralling on its own, evoking a My Dinner with Andre-style tête-à-tête. And while the film's exploration of the human condition is very much at the core of this story, there's also a traditional narrative at play that drives the two main characters forward. At least that's the case for Lipsky, whose ulterior motive is to find out if rumors surrounding Wallace's alleged drug addiction are true.

That said, the traveling aspect does make the writing even more engrossing. As Lipsky pries deeper and deeper into Wallace's personal life, the film's ever changing scenery starts to chip away at both characters. Through various encounters, Lipsky begins to see Wallace's dark side, which comes out in flashes of jarringly passive-aggressive behavior. Lipsky, on the other hand, starts to show his own insecurities as a fellow writer, resulting in his own subtle retaliation against Wallace.

The End of the Tour takes an interesting approach to telling the story of David Foster Wallace by structuring it around the author's five-day interview with Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky in 1996. The film may be self-indulgent at times, but stars Segel and Eisenberg anchor the proceedings with just the right amount of emotion and complexity. ...
