Although Bayern won its first national championship in 1932, the club was not selected for the Bundesliga at its inception in 1963. The club had its period of greatest success in the mid-1970s when, under the captaincy of Franz Beckenbauer, they won the European Cup three consecutive times (1974–1976).

- Second fiddle to 1860. Back in 1963, 1860 Munich, rather than Bayern, were the city's dominant side. Having just won the Oberliga South, 1860 were chosen along with four other teams from the division - including Eintracht Frankfurt and Stuttgart - to become part of the newly founded Bundesliga, which brought together 16 clubs from the country's five regional leagues.
