Raybon and McGuire formed the band in 1984 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama with bassist Ralph Ezell, keyboardist Stan Thorn and guitarist Jim Seales. McGuire invited noted producer Robert Byrne out to see the band perform and he was so impressed he recorded a demo on the group and pitched them to Columbia Records.
In 2006, Shenandoah partnered with the independent Cumberland Road label to release Journeys. It was a last hurrah for Ezell, who died of a heart attack on November 30, 2007. The band soldiered on, with Mike Folsom becoming their new bassist and Jimmy Yeary joining as lead singer.
Seales said Shenandoah was never built around one personality in the band. Its biggest change was in 1997, when lead singer Marty Raybon left the band for a country and gospel career.
