The county was created by the act of January 6, 1851, and was named for William K. Sebastian, who was judge of the first circuit for severalyears following the admission of Arkansas into the Union, president of the state senate in the session of 1846, and United States senator from 1847 to 1865.
Sebastian County was named after William K. Sebastian, a U.S. Senator, and judge. With only 529 square miles, it is the smallest county in the State but has two county seats. One is at Ft. Smith.
