Early life. McGriff was born in Tampa, Florida. His mother, Eliza, was a schoolteacher and his father, Earl, was an electronics repairman. As a child, he hung out at Al Lopez Field during Cincinnati Reds spring training and worked as a vendor at Tampa Stadium.
McGriff, who played 19 major league seasons with the Blue Jays, Padres, Braves, Devil Rays, Cubs and Dodgers, was born on Oct. 31, 1963, in Tampa, Fla. The tall, lanky McGriff was drafted in the ninth round of the 1981 amateur draft by the New York Yankees.
