Kaminski was born in Harrogate, North Riding of Yorkshire, England. He made his first professional performance with the Leeds Orchestra when he was 14. During his time at the Leeds School of Music, he founded the band Cow, together with his friends John Hodgson, who played drums, [1] and John Marcangelo, who played keyboards and other percussion.

The story starts in 1970 in Birmingham, England, where the Electric Light Orchestra began their journey as one of the world's most popular rock bands. Their music was characterized by a fusion of Beatlesque pop, classical arrangements, and futuristic iconography. Mik Kaminski joined the band in 1973 with his legendary blue violin.
The other participants included Richard Tandy (playing nearly a dozen different keyboards, including Wurlitzer electric piano, Hohner clavinet and ARP Omni synthesizer), Kelly Groucutt on bass, Mik Kaminski on violin, and on cellos (a key part of the ELO sound) Hugh McDowell and Melvyn Gale.
