The Pinnacles are part of the Neenach Volcano which erupted 23 million years ago near present-day Lancaster. The movement of the Pacific Plate along the San Andreas fault split a section of rock off from the main body of the volcano and moved it 195 miles (314 km) to the northwest.
May 10, 2023 · The remaining bits are still located in Southern California and are known as the Neenach Volcanic Formation, but the rest moved 195 miles (315 km) northward to their current location 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Salinas.

The giant San Andreas Fault split the volcano and the Pacific Plate crept north, carrying the Pinnacles.
Located in central California, near the San Andreas Fault, Pinnacles National Park is named for its spiraling rock formations, believed to be remnants of the extinct Neenach Volcano. Since 2003, the park has released captive-bred condors as part of its participation in the California Condor Recovery Program.
