Founded at the corner of Water Street and Tun Alley by Joshua Carpenter in 1693, the three-story Tun Tavern derived its name from the Old English word “Tun” for keg or barrel of beer. Conveniently located near Philadelphia’s riverfront wharves, Tun Tavern became popular among seafarers and others who supported the city’s maritime industry.
The Tun Tavern® (the “Tavern”) was a brew house built by Samuel Carpenter in 1685. It was located on Philadelphia’s historic waterfront at the corner of Water Street and Tun Alley leading to Carpenter’s Wharf near what is today known as “Penn’s Landing”.
His base of operations for this recruitment drive was Tun Tavern, a popular local watering hole built by Joshua Carpenter in the late 17th Century. Tun Tavern burned down in 1781, near the end of the Revolutionary War. It's unlikely to be reconstructed, at least not on its original site, which is now occupied by Interstate 95.
