James Francis "Jock" McHale (12 December 1882 – 4 October 1953) was an Australian rules football player and coach for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League in a marathon career that extended from 1903 to 1949.
The ‘Jock McHale Medal’ is an award given to the coach of the winning premiership team in the AFL and has been awarded since 1950. McHale was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 1996 and was elevated to Legend status in 2005. RELATED.

Biography. Arguably the greatest figure in the club’s history, Jock McHale played for 17 seasons, coached for 38 — yes, 38 — and provided the leadership, spirit and inspiration that kept Collingwood at or near the top of the football tree for the first 50 years of the 20th century. Even today, his name is synonymous with Collingwood.
His nickname “Jock” came from a caricature of him in a kilt by the Herald cartoonist Wells during the 1920s. The McHale Method was a training regime that inculcated machine-like team-play and the main objective of each player is to beat his individual opponent. Jock married Violet Mary Angel on 28 April 1909.
