Sugarbush was opened on December 25, 1958, by Damon and Sara Gadd and Jack Murphy. In 1977, the Gadds sold the resort to Roy Cohen. Cohen purchased the Glen Ellen Ski Area (Mount Ellen) in 1979 and annexed it to Sugarbush.
Win owned and operated Sugarbush for 18 years until the resort was purchased by the Alterra Mountain Company on January 14, 2020. Alterra Mountain Company owns 16 ski resorts throughout the USA and Canada including Stratton Mountain and Mont Tremblant in the East and Deer Valley, Steamboat, and Palisades Tahoe in the West.
Early Years. Upper Glen Ellen. As the story goes, engineer Walton Elliott told his wife Cynthia that he wanted to relocate from Connecticut to Vermont to start a ski area. The young family soon moved to Warren, as Elliott assembled a group of investors and acquired land on the side of Mt. Ellen.
