On May 17, 2006 The WB confirmed that Everwood has been cancelled and had a remainder of three episodes left to shoot. It was later confirmed that the series finale would air June 5, 2006, before merging from WB/UPN into The CW Network.
Everwood season 4 ended with the episode "Foreverwood", which was originally envisioned as a season finale but doubled as a series finale. This was done because the producers were unsure if Everwood season 5 would happen or not - it ultimately didn't, but not because the show wasn't drawing in viewers.

Because of the impending WB/UPN merger into the CW Television Network , the future of the series was uncertain, and the producers wrote two endings.
