Krishnagiri National Park was created in 1974 and later renamed as 'Borivali National Park'. In 1981, it was re-dedicated as 'Sanjay Gandhi National Park' in memory of Sanjay Gandhi, the son of ex-Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi.

Borivali National Park, which was only 20.26 square kilometres in size, replaced the older name of Krishnagiri National Park during the pre-independence era (1942). Following the Bombay National Park Act, this was done in 1942.

It is remarkable that such a large national park exists INSIDE a city!
