The term “UC Bearcat” dates back to 1914 and seems to have first appeared in the campus newspaper following a football game between UC and the University of Kentucky Wildcats.

UC‘s mascot was a bit different in the ‘70s. He was covered in black tufts of fur and his fiberglass head was pinpointed by a bright red snout. There was only one early Bear suit, and it was by all accounts warm, itchy and had poor visibility. “You could only see out of one eye,” Humes says.
In 1922, UC’s Bearcat was indeed a bear, rearing up on its hind legs with a snarl on its face and a giant “C” behind it. The bear incarnation of the Bearcat was in place for several years, even to the point of using a live bear cub mascot from the Cincinnati Zoo.
