Jan 22, 2006 · Pend Oreille County, in the extreme northeast corner of Washington, was the last county created in the state. The long narrow strip of land bordering the Idaho Panhandle comprised the easternmost part of Stevens County until designated a separate county in 1911.
The last county to be established in Washington State, Pend Oreille County is located in the northeastern tip of the state, bordering Idaho and Canada. Originally inhabited by the Kalispel tribe, Pend Oreille County was one of the last counties to be settled and still features a relatively sparse population.
