Started in 2017 by a programmer known as Chocobozzz, development of PeerTube is now supported by the French non-profit Framasoft.

Dec 14, 2021 · With PeerTube 4.0 the content creators will also be able to benefit from features to better manage all the videos on their PeerTube channels or view their subscribers. For now, this subscriber view is basic and doesn’t allow for (much) action. Among other noteworthy changes, this release comes with support for 144p video resolution.

We have so many announcements to make about the future we plan for PeerTube, that we will publish a separate news, in two weeks. We are also planning on hosting an "Ask Us Anything" livestream, to answer the questions you'd have about PeerTube.
When a user shares a PeerTube link, the application exposes information using the OEmbed format allowing external websites to automatically embed the video (i.e inject the PeerTube player). Some platforms do this with any external link (Twitter, Mastodon...) but some other platforms may need additional configuration.

Every single instance has their own rules, if none of them are good enough for you, you can create your instance (or pay someone to do it for you). If you use the instance of someone else, you need no coding knowledge.
