Mary was born in 1386, most likely in September, in Dijon, France. She was the eighth of the nine children of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Margaret III, Countess of Flanders. From her birth, Mary's father intended her to marry Amadeus VIII of Savoy, son of Amadeus VII, Count of Savoy and Bonne of Berry.
