Wake of the Red Witch is a really fascinating John Wayne film. He plays a really unlikeable lead, at least for the first act, and is a character filled with anger and hatred. It is rather like a dry-run for Ethan Edwards, in a way. Wayne has a lot more complex performances in his filmography than popular legend allows, this is one.

Wake of The Red Witch is a good sea story; it's also a court drama and love story, with a main character you hope isn't patterned after someone real. It probably IS best read on isolated duty - something to keep a person occupied for several days at the end of the world. The movie, BTW, follows the print rather well.
