It's worth noting that the PG-13 rating wasn't added until 1984, two years after ET came out. My daughter is 6 and routinely watches movies that Commonsense Media rates 8+. We've tried watching ET twice now and haven't made it more than about 15 minutes before she's too scared. Spielberg REALLY lays on the suspense.
