Cassandra Elizabeth Austen (9 January 1773 – 22 March 1845 [1]) was an amateur English watercolourist and the elder sister of Jane Austen. The letters between her and Jane form a substantial foundation to scholarly understanding of the life of the novelist.

Cassandra Austen. Cassandra was three years older than her sister Jane, and the two were best friends all their lives. Cassandra was pretty, practical and sensible, and although she is often pictured as the more solemn of the two sisters, Jane at least thought she was extremely funny. In a letter from 1796 she wrote:

Cassandra Austen, Jane's older sister, was born on 9 January 1773, 250 years ago today. In her honour, 2023 will be our ‘Year of Cassandra’, featuring events and exhibitions celebrating her life.
