A Gala Day in Lansing - The Laying of the Capitol Cornerstone On October 2, 1872, the Cornerstone of the current Michigan State Capitol building was laid with elaborate ceremony. Over 30,000 people attended this event, over four times the population of the city at the time.
At first called “Michigan, Michigan,” this confusing name was changed a few months later to “Lansing.” Although it has been Michigan’s capital since 1847, Lansing was not actually incorporated as a city until 1859. The “temporary” capitol was clearly inadequate from the start.
