The school originally opened in the fall of 1963 for 7th graders. From that day forward they were always the 'seniors' at Indian River Junior High. In their Junior ['67-'68] year the school board was petitioned and the school was upgraded to Indian River Senior High.
The college was established in 1959 as Indian River Junior College and located in a former public school building in Fort Pierce. IRJC moved to its current main campus on Virginia Avenue in 1963 after the city of Fort Pierce donated the site to the institution.
Mar 17, 2019 · Alan Hines, who graduated in 1973, entered Indian River as a junior in 1972 when the formerly all-black Crestwood High was closed.
These students went to the Indian River Junior High building until they reached the 10th grade, at which time this building became Indian River High School. The year 1969 marked our first graduating class. The facility was considered quite modern and up to date at the time.
In 1965, with the advent of integration, Indian River Junior College and Lincoln Junior College merged, creating one college to serve students in Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties.
