Born in Paterson, New Jersey in 1947, Randy Edelman grew up in nearby Teaneck, where he studied piano at an early age. He gave recitals locally and after high school graduation he attended the University of Cincinnati as a pre-med major, soon changing his aim and enrolling at the Cincinnati Music Conservatory, where he majored in piano and composition.
