Following completion of Father's Little Dividend, Minnelli returned to complete An American in Paris (see above). Father's Little Dividend was a sequel to the popular 1950 M-G-M release, Father of the Bride (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1941-50). Cast members portraying the Banks and the Dunstan familes were the same in both films.

Father's Little Dividend, which was a sequel to Father Of The Bride, was, above all else, a Spencer Tracy vehicle. Here Tracy revised his role of Stanley Banks whose daughter, Kay (the eldest of his 3 children) had married Buckley Dunstan, a stuffy, young man whom he didn't (and still doesn't) particularly approve of.
