The end result was The Fog, a spooky romp about a dark secret that returns to haunt the Pacific fishing community of Antonio Bay on the 100th anniversary of the town's charter. Carpenter sets the mood in the film's prologue, which features grizzled old sea salt Mr. Machen (John Houseman) spinning ghost stories for a group of local children.
Dark and Foggy. The Fog (1980)- Carpenter's wonderful synth score and cinematography (especially long views of the staircase down to the lighthouse) are the best parts of this scooby-doo level mystery. There's a nice slow buildup, but I don't think there's much payoff at the end- even with good delivery by Adrienne Barbeau.
