In earlier times, it wasn’t unusual for a pastor to leave his church for a month or more to recharge.

Another approach would be to offer one month or one-half month of sabbatical leave for every year of service up to a maximum of four or five months, and to allow the pastor to schedule the sabbatical at their convenience.
A request from the Pastor for sabbatical leave will be submitted to the Chair of the Diaconate. Requests for sabbatical leave from all other staff members will be submitted to the Pastor. Contingencies A staff person on sabbatical leave is relieved of routine responsibilities and will not be on call for wed-dings, funerals or other similar duties.
Feb 9, 2022 · The first reason pastors, like everyone, should regularly rest is because the Lord commands it. We are finite creatures with limited capacities. We are not made to run 24/7, 365 days a year. But the main reason pastors should take a substantive break (like a sabbatical) is because pastoral ministry takes an enormous emotional toll.
1. A pastor has emotional highs and lows unlike most other vocations. In the course of a day, a pastor can deal with death, deep spiritual issues, great encouragement, petty criticisms, tragedies, illnesses and celebrations of birth. In a day when most pastors leave their churches every eighteen months and step out of the pastorate after five years, churches must do better at recognizing that sabbaticals benefit pastors and congregations.
