Catherine was the wife of Henry V of England (r. 1413-1422 CE) and mother of Henry VI of England (r. 1422-61 & 1470-71 CE). She also later married the Welsh courtier Owen Tudor (c. 1400-1461 CE) and so started the Tudor dynasty.
Jan 15, 2024 · Owen entered the service of Queen Catherine of Valois as keeper of the Queen's wardrobe, (essentially her major-domo) after the death of her husband Henry V of England on 22 August 1422. The Queen initially lived with her infant son, King Henry VI, before moving to Wallingford Castle early in his reign and taking Tudor with her.
Catherine accompanied Henry to Harfleur, and returned a widow in May 1422 when Henry died of dysentery. She subsequently made a secret marriage with Owen Tudor. The grandson of this marriage took the throne as Henry VII. Catherine died in February 1437, was buried in the Lady Chapel, Westminster abbey, and later placed alongside Henry V.
Owen Tudor was a gentleman of Catherine's household when he attracted her attention and made a secret marriage. After Catherine's death in 1437 he was shown some favour by Henry VI, and fought for the Lancastrians at Mortimer's Cross; captured in the battle, he was executed in Hereford market-place.
