Alison Brown (born August 7, 1962) is an American banjo player, guitarist, composer, and producer. She has won and has been nominated for several Grammy awards and is often compared to another banjo prodigy, Béla Fleck, for her unique style of playing. In her music, she blends bluegrass, jazz, Latin and Celtic influences.
She’s acclaimed as one of today’s finest progressive banjo players, but you rarely find her in a conventional bluegrass setting. Instead, she’s known for leading an ensemble that successfully marries a broad array of roots-influenced music: folk, jazz, Celtic and Latin.

May 5, 2023 · Brown is a trailblazer in modern music, becoming the first woman to win an International Bluegrass Music Association “Best” award as an instrumentalist (Banjo Player of the Year in 1991), and the first woman to be inducted into the American Banjo Hall of Fame as a 5-string banjoist (2019).
