The positive response to the Survey’s “Harlem Number” compelled Locke to expand his vision of the New Negro into the landmark anthology of the period. Locke drew on the special issue but expanded his canvas significantly, adding more sections dedicated to the arts flourishing in Harlem to better frame the energy and promise of African American culture.
