Petunia, genus of about 35 species of flowering plants in the nightshade family (Solanaceae), native to South America. The common garden petunia (Petunia ×atkinsiana) is an ornamental plant whose showy trumpet-shaped flowers make it popular for summer flower beds and window boxes.
May 14, 2024 · Petunias will grow best in full sun and well-drained soil that is kept moist. If you're planting petunias as a groundcover, be sure to space plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Petunias should be given at least 1 to 2 inches of water every 7 to 10 days once established. Light, frequent waterings should be avoided as it will encourage shallow rooting.
Sowing petunias. The annual or bedding petunias can be grown from seed sown indoors with warmth in spring in cell trays, seed trays or small pots at a temperature of 18-24°C (65-75°F). When large enough to handle, prick out plants individually into cell trays or small pots and grow on at a temperature of 50-65°F (10-15°C) in good light.
