Julius August Walter Goethe was the only son of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. His mother was Goethe's lover Christiane Vulpius. He studied law in Heidelberg and Jena. In 1817 he married Ottilie, Freiin von Pogwisch. They had three children but it was a difficult marriage. He served from 1810 onwards as a chamberlain in Weimar.
