Before Wikipedia, the rule was always "Never use an encyclopedia as a source". It's a reference work. You use it to pick a topic, get an overview, and find a list of sources to do your research. Wikipedia does have a lot of articles that go into significantly more depth than print encyclopedias did, but it's still an encyclopedia by nature.
