An unusual aspect of the Montfort family was that, until the 13 th century, they virtually avoided the Crusades, although they were related to one of the kings of Jerusalem: Fulk of Anjou (d. 1143). She was the daughter of Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester and Eleanor of England. She was also the second woman who can be shown to have used the title Princess of Wales .

Eleanor's brothers were Henry de Montfort, Simon de Montfort, Amaury de Montfort, Guy de Montfort and Richard de Montfort. She was the wife of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd (died 1282). It is not known where Eleanor was born, but it appears that she remained with her mother throughout her childhood and adolescence.
