But none of that makes Armin a bad character. I think it's partly an artifact of the problems of writing a monthly manga - Isayama has the shape of the overall plot, then he sketches in the details, and some of the things he has to do for plot reasons become sketchy as a result. But Armin himself has a central role in the manga.

Eren coming to the conclusion of rumbling the world and Armin being against it but betraying paradis as a result. That was what happened but the buildup on armin's part was missing, so he doesn't feel like a good rival to Eren unlike the two above. And he should've had a plan.
