William Wyler was born in 1902 in Alsace, then in Germany, now part of France. His parents were Jewish and his birth name was Wilhelm Weiller which he never actually legally changed. The family were comfortably off and his father had a successful haberdashery business.
William Wyler was a German-born American film director who was highly respected by his peers and had a lengthy career ranging from the 1920s to the 1970s. He received an Academy Award for Best Director three times: "Mrs. Miniver" in 1942, "The "Best Years of Our Lives" in 1946, and "Ben-Hur" in 1959.
