Bartenders are drug dealers and our custys are, by and large, addicts. That’s the dirty truth of this profession. I would say don’t do what I did and lose all form of empathy, that’ll just wreck you as a person, but it’s something that you’ll need to come to grips with if you wanna continue in the industry now, unfortunately.
A lot of good responses already! Just adding my perspective as a bartender of 5 years and someone who regularly visits the other bars in town. As a patron, if you can't afford at least a 15% tip don't go out, period. As a bartender, don't get frustrated. You have a fun job and the vast majority of people are giving tips.

At the end of the day, they know that the bar is still a business and if they’re drinking 1. inventory is going to waste (which means the club is losing money) and 2. they might potentially miss out on making money because they’re losing focus for sales. Close every night.
