Salka Viertel was born in Sambor, Galicia (then part of Austria-Hungary, now Ukraine) on June 15, 1889. Her father, Auguste Steuermann, was the first Jewish mayor of Sambor. He and his wife, Clara, had three other children: Rose, Eduard and Siegmund.
