As far as I can tell, David Cross didn't use an electric violin in 70's KC. His setup looks more like a normal violin with a pickup attached (you can see it at 2:05 in this video ). From my own experience using a pickup on a violin, it's not nearly as powerful as an electric guitar or electric violin.
