   Cynically, I think it's because Tarkovsky didn't have an answer or enough budget to film anything interesting if they did go in. At the end, the daughter appears to have telekinetic powers. It's underwhelming, but it's something. It isn't reward enough for the Stalker character's self-pity - the overriding aspect of his character.
