Watch the anime, then read the manga. I like the '97 tv-series much more, the movies feel like Berserk Abridged, 9 episodes are condensed into 70 minutes in the first movie. Not to mention the art is good in the TV-series, the animation is a bit stiff but I prefer that rather than low budget CGI crap.
Very good. Give Berserk Redux a look. What you heard of the newer anime having horrid CGI is the 2016-17 series which is kind of a sequel to the trilogy. Those 2 seasons are indeed a curse to your eyes (awful CGI and camera movements) and ears (shitty sound design) and is hardly recommendable.
