The name comes from a bribery scandal involving Lockheed and Japanese officials in 1972. Director William Friedkin was not the first choice to direct this film. Writer/director Paul Brickman, who adapted the novel the film is based on, was originally going to do it, but re-shoots on "Risky Business" prevented this.
